한국의 안전 훈련에 대해 이야기해 주세요.

예전에는 민방위 훈련을 매달 정기적으로 진행했었다. 전쟁이 날 것을 대비해서 민간인들이 안전한곳으로 대피하는 것이 훈련의 주된 목표였다. 학교와 기업들도 모두 참여했고, 차량 운행도 훈련 시간중에는 중단되었다. 다들 훈련 라디오 방송에 귀를 기울이고, 대피 요령 등을 숙지했다. 그러나 요즘에는 이런 민방위 훈련이 진행되지 않는다. 그 대신 지진이나 흥수 등의 자연재해나 대형 화재 등에 대비하는 안전 훈련이 그때그때 필요에 따라 진행된다. 이러한 훈련은 화재시 계단이나 비상구를 이용하여 건물 밖으로 안전하게 대피하는 방범과, 지진이 발생했을 때 해야 하는 가장 안전한 행동율 숙지하는 것이 목표다. 이러한 훈련을 롱해서 재난이 발생했을 때, 인명 피해를 최소화할 수 있다.

 

Talk about safety drills in Korea.

In the past, civil defense drills were held on a monthly basis. The main goal of the drills was to train civilians to take refuge in safe places in case of war. Schools and companies all participated, and traffic came to a standstill during the drills. Everyone tuned in to radio broadcasts for the drill and committed to memory the evacuation procedures. Nowadays, these civil defense drills are a thing of the past. Instead, safety drills to prepare for natural disasters like earthquakes or floods and for major fires are carried out as needed. The goal of these drills is to learn how to safely evacuate a building via stairs and emergency exits during a fire, or the safest way to act during an earthquake. Through these safety drills, casualties can be kept to a minimum when disaster strikes.

disaster strikes 재해/재난이 닥치다
 
disaster는 happen, occur 등의 동사보다는 본문에서와 같이 strike 라는 동사와 함께 사용하는 경우가 많다.  또한 실제 재난 수준의 사건이 아니더라도 불행한 일을 말할 때 비유적인 표현으로 흔히 사용된다.

예) Even if disaster strikes, we will be ready, (재앙이 닥쳐도 우리는 준비돼 있을 것이다.)
Disaster struck when I spilled wine on the wedding dress. (웨딩드레스에 와인을 흘려서 큰일이 났다.)

 

◎Expression of the Day◎

It doesn't hurt to be careful.    조심해서 나쁠 건 없잖아. 
 

A: What's going on? Where is everyone going? Is something wrong?
B: It's a fire safety drill. Didn't you get the e-mail announcement yesterday?
A: Oh, that. It's so annoying. Why do we have to do this every month?
B: It doesn't hurt to be careful. Besides, it's nice to leave the office for a few minutes.

A: 무슨 일이야? 다들 어디를 가는 거지? 무슨 문제라도 생긴 거야?
B: 화재 안전 훈련이야. 어제 이메일 공지 못 받았어?
A: 오, 그거. 너무 짜증나. 왜 매달 이걸 해야만 하는 거지?
